8th Annual Lee Anderson Hiring Our Heroes Awards Gala
The 8th Annual Lee Anderson Hiring Our Heroes Awards Gala, presented by USAA, returned once again to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce on November 14, 2018. The evening featured the presentation of eight awards, the celebration of the accomplishments made during the past year, and the honoring of those who have served and still serve. Beyond celebrating the awardees, the event highlights included a dessert reception prepared by Chef Robert Irvine, a Navy veteran and founder of the Robert Irvine Foundation, which supports service members and first responders.
The Hiring Our Heroes awards are given in eight categories: Military Transition; Veteran and Military Spouse Employment; Post-9/11 Veteran Employment; Wounded Veteran and Military Caregiver Employment; Military Spouse Employment and Mentoring; Small Business Veteran and Military Spouse Employment; Individual Excellence in Veteran Employment; and the President’s Award for Lifetime Achievement.
2018 Hiring Our Heroes Award Recipients
2018 Military Leadership Award for Outstanding Support to Military Transition
The 2018 base award was presented to Fort Gordon, US Army Cyber Center for Excellence; and the individual award was presented to Alecia Grady of Joint Base Lewis McChord.
2018 Lee Anderson Veteran and Military Spouse Employment Award
Presented to Deloitte for overall excellence in hiring and retaining veterans, transitioning service members, and military spouses in the private sector. Other finalists included Capital One, CarMax, and Werner Enterprises.
2018 Steve Robinson Post-9/11 Veteran Employment Award
Presented to Amazon for effective and sustained efforts to enhance the ability of post-9/11 veterans and transitioning service members to find meaningful employment. The other finalists included Boeing, Cushman & Wakefield, and UPS.
2018 Comcast NBCUniversal Wounded Veteran and Military Caregiver Employment Award
Presented to Dog Tag Inc. for demonstrated leadership in addressing the unique challenges and demands for wounded, ill, and injured veterans as well as military caregivers in their search for meaningful employment. The other finalists included Flags of Valor, PyschArmor, and Paralyzed Veterans of America (PVA).
2018 USAA Military Spouse Employment and Mentoring Award
Presented to Microsoft for demonstrated hiring, mentorship, and support of military spouses in their search for meaningful employment. The other finalists included Bank of America, Military Officers Association of America (MOAA), and WWC.
2018 Capital One Small Business Award for Veteran and Military Spouse Employment
Presented to Flags of Valor for demonstrated leadership by a small business or organization (less than 500 employees) in hiring veterans, transitioning service members, and military spouses. The other finalists included Operation Gratitude, R.Riveter, and She Swank Marketplace.
2018 Colonel Michael Endres Leadership Award
Presented to Sean Kelley of Amazon for Individual Excellence in Veteran Employment, for an individual who has gone above and beyond to make a difference in employment opportunities for veterans, transitioning service members, and spouses. The other finalists included Danny Chung, Chief of Staff and Business Manager for Military Affairs at Microsoft, Marjorie Morrison, Founder and CEO at PsychArmor, and Tom Downs, Senior Manager, Diversity Talent Acquisition, Capital One.
2018 Hiring Our Heroes President’s Award
Presented to the Honorable R. Jim Nicholson for a lifetime of commitment and service to veterans and military families. A graduate of the United States Military Academy, Nicholson’s reputation of caring for those in need spans decades public and private service dedicated to our country as well as our service members and their families.
